The two roads diverged in a yellow wood forest symbolizing a person’s life. ‘The Road Not Taken’ is more than a poem about someone trying to decide which road he’s going to take on a stroll through the woods. The poet beautifully leaves this to the imagination of the readers Ambiguity is one of the striking features of Frost in poetry. However, the line “… And that has made all the difference” is not clear. It can lead to a great discovery, success, prosperity, or happiness. A small courageous step makes a big difference. Here “sigh” should not be taken as regret. The phrase “some were ages and age hence” refers to a distant future. The chief theme of his poetry is an ambiguous relationship with nature. The poem inspires us to face the challenging realities in life. The poem makes us think about choice we must make in life.Īll of us reach a crucial point in life when we must make the right choice. We should always have the courage to choose the right way even if it is rough and thorny. Here conflict is between the right choice and wrong choice. The striking feature of Frosts’ poems is the presentation of conflicts. It seems to be a characteristic of Robert Frost to express doubt while making revolutionary decisions. As the expression goes: "Don't look back you're not going that way.He says that perhaps he may use the more conventional path sometime in future, but it is not possible to start the journey afresh. However, I personally have found that you can't spend too much time dwelling on that, because life moves forward, not backwards. One does wonder at times, on life's journey, what taking a different road might have led to. I didn't know the history behind the poem thank you for sharing. That's very interesting that he wrote it based on his walks with a friend. The Road Not Taken is a classic of form and content. Some poetry can be helpful to us in our real lives, as a guide and comfort, as a catalyst. ![]() Juicy pickings his lines are full of.you are most welcome.Īndrew Spacey (author) from Sheffield, UK on April 25, 2018: Yes, Frost is a great poet of traditional form and often leaves us wanting more. Such an interpretation makes it an amusing poem.Īndrew Spacey (author) from Sheffield, UK on April 26, 2018: When he is older he will lie to young people about how his choice of the hard road made a significant difference when the choice was irrelevant. His interpretation is both roads are fundamentally the same. My English Literature teacher gave a different interpretation. Frost, formal and full of mischief, giving the reader so many choices. He found the religion that gave his life meaning.Īndrew Spacey (author) from Sheffield, UK on September 12, 2018:Īppreciate the visit and comment. It is ambiguous, as you say, but if you write or read poetry, it is positive. I like Frost looking back and looking forward, too, "ages and ages hence" as if toward the end of his life, and we remember Frost's choice was to be a poet, almost certainly the path less traveled and compared with any other path he might have chosen, all the difference. They go down a path and all the others are not chosen. I love reading this poem with young people as they are at the age where many of life's choices are being made every day. Interesting addition to this Frost poem analysis, grateful. ![]() Oh, well, it's led me to where I am today, which isn't so bad.not at all.Īndrew Spacey (author) from Sheffield, UK on February 25, 2019: Looking back on some of the choices I've made at that fork, I can clearly see that I took the wrong path. I, like others, have come to that proverbial "fork in the road" many times. Thanks, Andrew, for this excellent analysis of one of my favorite Robert Frost poems. It seems we have to make mistakes - travel down the wrong road - in order to learn from experience? Frost's Road Not Taken is different for every single reader, something to ponder on.Īudrey Hunt from Pahrump NV on February 26, 2019: If we could always take the right road we perhaps wouldn't be human. Maybe that idea is for another poem.Īndrew Spacey (author) from Sheffield, UK on February 26, 2019: One does have to be able to recognize a mistake, however.
